What are dental fillings?
Dental fillings are a standard procedure for most dentists. They are typically done with either a resin composite material or porcelain, which are white in color to best match the color and tone of your original teeth. They can be individually shaped, molded, and colored to blend in as naturally as possible.
When are dental fillings used?
Dental fillings are used to repair gaps, cracks, or chips in teeth that have occurred as the result of an accident. Similarly, they are used in teeth that have become worn down or that have damage from a cavity. In order to help the tooth stay in working condition, dentists will apply the resin composite filling to specific areas. If a tooth has started to decay, it can be used as a protective material for the tooth. Lastly, these fillings are also used to replace metal fillings, which typically only last for a limited time.
Fillings are a very common procedure and are often able to be done in the moment on a visit. If you experience any of the following symptoms, contact your dentist today:
Increased sensitivity of the teeth or gums (this might be sensitivity to hot or cold temperatures, as well as pressure or eating certain foods)
Pain or ache in a tooth or in a general area
If your tooth is decaying or you have a cavity that needs to be filled
You have a tooth that has been damaged, and you can see visible cracks or chips or breaks in the tooth.
Getting a filling
Fillings are a basic and standard practice, and a common treatment used to help protect and heal teeth at every age. They are often done in the moment, and typically do not need any type of anesthesia or numbing agents. They can be done in a matter of minutes, and once applied, are hardened with light to cure the resin. They are gently shaped and molded to match the structure of your tooth, and will gradually blend in more with your own teeth and jaw. Patients will leave shortly after, with no side effects.
